I rolled onto my back, laying my head onto my pillow, basking in the afterglow. After leaving Rhett and Ava’s house, we ended up at my place for the night. On the drive home, I had to embarrassingly explain why I lied about our first meeting. His only response was to shake his head with amusement.

Liam rolled onto his side, sprinkling my neck with kisses as I tried to slow my heart rate and heavy breathing. He pulled his face from my neck, giving me a soft, rare smile.

“What?” I asked.

“Nothing… Just trying to figure out how I got so lucky to be here with you, right now…”

“This is where you belong,” I assured him.

His smile faded as I watched the doubt spread through his eyes.

“Liam.” I spoke his name softly, reaching my hand to his jawline, letting his scruff grate the pads of my fingers.

“Let’s not talk, princess. I just need to hold you right now.”

He pulled me onto my side so my front was pressed against his as he held me close. I cuddled into his body, closing my eyes. As much as I wanted to push, the idea of cuddling with him won, allowing him to escape any probing questions I had.

I tried to force my mind to shut down and sleep, but it was running rampant with unsettling thoughts. Every time Liam would avoid the topic of his past, my imagination would take over. I had no idea what to think. I knew in my heart there was nothing that would make me look at him any different, but he seemed to have the same level of confidence that it would.

I felt his breathing slow. I glanced up to look at his beautiful sleeping face, resisting the urge to touch it. He looked so at ease. I didn’t want to wake him. I took a deep breath to clear my mind, and I let sleep overtake me.
